Several technologies compete for the right to power billions of vehicles over the next century, but only hydrogen offers the critical combination of abundance and zero emissions. Before hydrogen cars fully replace their gas-guzzling counterparts on the roads, several obstacles remain, but the solution is as simple as the phrase uttered in the 1989 film Field of Dreams: If you build it, they will come.

Building an Infrastructure

Many detractors of hydrogen vehicle technology cite the disparity between the number of gasoline and hydrogen filling stations, with upwards of 200,000 gas stations versus 62 hydrogen stations in the United States. The feasibility of hydrogen cars is questioned by using a variant of “Which came first, the chicken or the egg?”, but this is a false argument.

Consumers will purchase hydrogen cars where the fueling stations already exist, mainly in densely populated cities. As more vehicles are purchased, the demand for hydrogen filling stations will increase (37 are already planned) which will make it practical for more consumers to purchase hydrogen cars. The process will continue organically and stations will be built in a spider web pattern along ‘hydrogen highways’ that will serve to connect population centers. Similar plans have been enacted in other countries, including Canada, Denmark, Germany, Iceland, Japan, Norway, and Sweden.

The process will take a number of years, allowing an important but rarely discussed slow and smooth economical transition from gasoline fueling stations.

Widespread Vehicle Manufacturing

Automakers worldwide are facing declining sales in all models, and this has caused some auto manufacturers to suspend their development of hydrogen vehicles. Others, such as Daimler and Honda, continue to develop hydrogen vehicle technology, hoping to be among the first to market. These and other auto manufacturers are developing models that may be ready for full production in the next 4-5 years.

Once hydrogen cars are both available and proven, acceptance will increase, enticing additional auto manufacturers to restart their hydrogen vehicle development programs. Though they will be several years behind and face the stigma of being ‘behind the times’, the transitional pace of gas to hydrogen fueled vehicles will be gradual and won’t significantly harm their company’s bottom line.

A Decline of Alternative Competition

In 2009, gasoline powered vehicles clutter our roads no matter where we live. Gasoline engines are inefficient, produce a significant amount of pollution, and are based on the consumption of finite fossil fuels.

Biofuel, created from various plants, was popular several years ago but has now sparked several environmental controversies, such as the clear cutting of the rainforest in Brazil and ‘food vs. fuel’ in the United States and Europe. In addition, biofuel, like oil, is carbon based and is not the long term solution to reduced vehicle emissions.

100% Electric vehicles have supplanted biofuel as the choice du jour and while their technology, like hydrogen, emits zero emissions, their inability to instantly recharge makes them an impractical long term solution, especially in the United States. In a nation where the majority of shipping is conducted by trucks traversing hundreds of miles per day, electric semis are an inadequate solution.

In nations with a combination of increasingly restrictive emission standards and a road based shipping industry, hydrogen vehicles aren’t the best option, they are the only option.

A Confluence of Technology

The decision to replace gasoline powered vehicles with alternative fuels was first seriously considered in the 1970’s. Until recently, the idea has been abandoned and rediscovered several times with little success. Engineers and designers have developed several competing technologies that has fostered innovations that are years ahead of their time. Each technology has supporters that claim it to be the best choice for our future, but only hydrogen offers an environmental solution as well as the flexibility to serve all of our fuel needs.

A new study has revealed that millions of drivers are risking invalidating their car insurance policy simply because they cannot see properly.

According to research by the College of Optometrists, 20% of UK motorists aged between 35 and 55 have driven knowing that they have poor eyesight.

In the event of an accident in which defective eyesight is found to be a contributory factor, a car insurance company could well argue that the driver was negligent and refuse to pay out.

But the poll found that 28% of those surveyed admitted putting off going for a sight test for up to six months after noticing their eyesight had deteriorated, with 21% putting it off for up to five years.

The reason given by almost half (43%) of respondents for not seeking optical advice was that wearing glasses would make them feel older.

Meanwhile, a quarter claimed it was because they “couldn’t be bothered” and 18% said they were put off by the cost of glasses and contact lenses.

Thinking about trading the old pickup for something more economical?  Maybe all you need to do is to make the truck you have more fuel-efficient.  A tonneau cover can do that, and provide several other benefits as well!

A tonneau cover provides three main benefits:

Reduced drag for better fuel economy.
Lockable space to secure your belongings in the truck bed.
Protecting your belongings from the weather.

But if you’re thinking about getting a tonneau cover, you may be aware of the disadvantages as well:

Difficult to haul large payloads.
Difficult to get access to even small items in your truck bed.
Expensive to buy and install.

If you’re like most pickup truck owners, you really don’t use the full capacity of your truck anyway.  Closing off the bed with a tonneau cover might not be any sacrifice for you at all.  And most tonneau covers give you fairly quick access to your truck bed for small items, and most can be removed fairly easily for those times when you do need to carry large items.

But does a tonneau cover really save you gas?

There is some debate about the question, because most of the testing done to measure the effects of tonneau covers on gas mileage is a little bit suspect.  Most of these tests were sponsored by the automotive accessory industry, who has a vested interest in seeing positive results.  Also, few of these tests measured actual improvement in gas mileage in real-world conditions, focusing on wind-tunnel measurements of the effect of the tonneau cover on aerodynamic drag.

One thing we can safely conclude from these tests is that you will see more improvement in your gas mileage at highway speeds than in city driving.  Aerodynamic drag is one factor affecting your pickup truck’s fuel economy, but it is related to your driving speed.  At slow speeds, the aerodynamic improvement offered by a tonneau cover is just not that important.

But if you do a good deal of highway driving, as most pickup truck owners do, a tonneau cover might be just the thing to keep your gas guzzler satisfied without draining your wallet.

How long will it take for a tonneau cover to pay for itself?  That depends on a lot of factors.  How much does gas cost, or how much will it cost, on average, over the next few months?  How much gas do you buy every month?  How much gas is the tonneau cover saving you?  And how much did the tonneau cover cost?

Let’s try a few typical figures.  Within the past year (2008), gas prices ranged anywhere from $2.00 to $4.00 per gallon.  Let’s use $3.00.  And let’s suppose you purchase about sixty gallons of gas per month before you install the tonneau cover.  Some proponents claim that a tonneau cover saves them as much as 20%.  Let’s be more cautious and suppose the tonneau cover improves your fuel economy by 10%.  Tonneau covers, depending on the type and manufacturer, range from $230 to over $1200.  Let’s pick a middle value of about $600 for a typical hard tonneau cover.

Have you done the math?  Here’s what I get:  Using the assumptions stated above, a tonneau cover would save you about $18.00 per month.  At that rate, a $600 tonneau cover would pay for itself in just over 33 months.

Is it worth it?  You can decide that based on several factors.  Remember that if the price of gas goes up, the savings increase and the payback time is shorter.  Who would bet that the price of gas is not going to go up?  Also bear in mind that there are other advantages to having a tonneau cover, such as better security and better protection against the weather for the things you always leave in the back of the truck.

All things considered, a tonneau cover might be just what you need.

However, downgrading insurance cover in order to economise can be a high-risk strategy. Accidents can and do happen, even to the best drivers – so opting for lesser cover just to save a few pounds could prove costly in the long run.

Before making a decision based only on price, it’s not a bad idea to consider what a comprehensive policy offers that you cannot get with TPFT. The main difference is that a comprehensive policy will cover you for damage to your car. So you get cover for repairs after you’ve had a prang, or you will recover the market value of your car if it’s written off. With a TPFT policy, you have to pay out yourself. Ouch!

There are some circumstances where TPFT might be preferable, such as where the value of the car doesn’t really justify comprehensive cover. However, please carefully consider the lost policy benefits if you’re thinking of opting for TPFT cover on a higher valued car. Or – for that matter – for any car that you could not afford to repair or replace from your own funds.

If you’re really looking to save money on your policy, then shopping around to see who can offer you cover at the right price is more sensible than merely cutting down your level of protection.
